You Really Can Feel Less Old! It’s Simple!

Our interest in mobility has a positive correlation to our lack of it!  In other words, we become interested in how our joints and body move when we begin to feel stiff and old. Fortunately, it is not too late to regain our mobility.  It just takes making it a priority and then spending some time moving the body- ideally doing something every day!

Mobility is the ability to move our joints through their full, natural range of motion. 

Many factors can limit our mobility. Some we don’t have much control over such as age, whether we are male or female, and our genetics. However, there are many factors that we can control. Lack of or limited amounts of movement, poor nutrition, and stress can all negatively affect the range of motion in our bodies. And these are things that we can proactively address to improve how our bodies move.

Move it or lose it.

Getting exercise and moving your body on a regular basis is key. Disuse is one of the top reasons our joints get stiff and we feel old. So get out there and move! 

  • Strength training, yoga, and tai chi are examples of movement that enhances our mobility and reduces stiffness.
  • Swimming and water aerobics classes are also wonderful ways to move the body.
  • Riding a bike, going for a walk, and taking a dance class are other means for maintaining range of motion in our bodies.

Daily stretching and simple movement keep you limber.

I know it sounds like a pain in the you-know-what to take a few minutes to stretch each day. Even if you don’t want to stretch, taking 5-10 minutes each day to move your limbs through their natural range of motion can do wonders to reduce stiffness and relieve minor aches and pains. Arm circles, folding over to touch your toes, bending to the side, swinging your legs front-to-back and side-to-side, and rotating your ankles and your wrists are simple and effective movements that will keep your body limber and spry.  (Of course, only do these things if your body and joints are healthy!)
