Who wants to be stiff and unsteady?

Not me that is for sure.  And not many of our clients here at Strand Fitness!

Being stiff and unsteady may feel like a consequence of getting older.  But it does not have to be.  But much like anything else related to keeping our bodies strong and healthy as we age, being more flexible and having better balance requires regular practice!

Yoga is a perfect solution for more flexibility and better balance

This is why we now offer a yoga program here at Strand Fitness.  In all of the “body work” research that I have done and experienced over the years,  I have found yoga to be the best solution for staying limber and improving my balance.  Yoga also helps build body awareness, which is another important piece of the puzzle as we get older.  Staying in tune with your body (what is working well and where you find limitations) creates the foundation of self-care for the future.

If yoga interests you, look for classes with the title of gentle or restorative.  Learn about our yoga program by clicking here

At Strand Fitness, we took the guesswork out of finding a yoga class suited for you.  We developed our yoga program for the “slightly older” body.  Creating more flexibility and balance.  Restoring movement.  Reducing aches and pains that come from aging. These are our yoga goals at Strand Fitness.

Stretch therapy is a new, evolving option to feel less “old”

My profession and my lifestyle put significant demands on my body.  In addition to rekindling my yoga practice, I also sought out a massage/stretch therapist to help me deal with the stiffness in my body and address some annoying aches and pains.  It has been a great option for me.  (Here is the link to my massage/stretch therapist’s website site:  https://theintegratedrecovery.com/)

More and more research (academic and clinical) is suggesting that “purposeful” stretching (using a variety of tools) keeps the body performing well and ready for life.  “Purposeful” is important.  Making gains in flexibility and balance comes from an organized approach and consistent practice.  Just like building strength and stamina, the best results come from setting specific goals, having a program that is tailored to your body, and progressing the work over time.

Save time by combining stretch and balance work with your strength training

Sometimes I feel that taking care of my body is a full time job!  Who has time for everything that you “should” do?  For efficiency sake, I believe the best approach is to incorporate your flexibility and balance training into your strength and stamina program.  That can be accomplished by dedicating one of your sessions or workouts to stretching and releasing the tension in your body (e.g. go to a yoga class).  If you work with a personal trainer, ask them to help you work on flexibility and balance.  They can incorporate this into your sessions and/or help you learn stretches and movements that you can do on your own.

Spending 5-10 minutes a day on this goal is essential for moving with ease and confidence as you get older.
