The other day I was catching up with a new personal training client at Strand Fitness. Even though she had just started working with us, she said she already felt stronger and then added a smile. We exchanged a knowing look and said together, “Who knew it would be so fun to be strong!”
The truth is… being strong is fun!
The process towards becoming strong might not be so much fun, but the state of “being strong” is a very cool place to be! When we help the body function as designed, we end up in a state of bliss. And it’s hard not to enjoy that.
When clients feel their strength for the first time, they have a sense of lightness about them. Sometimes they are almost giddy – almost too embarrassed to share how good it feels to flex a muscle and actually see it! That sense of fun stays with them too!
It feels great to feel good about your body and what it can do!
After a year of training, one 53-year-old client exclaimed, “I feel like I am 21 – I am that strong!”
I have seen people give themselves a little fist pump when they tell me about the 10 strokes they took off of their golf game.
I see the pride when someone lifts their personal best and the joy when it occurs to someone how strong they have become.
At our training studio, people love to master the Roman Chair (see below), and do a little victory dance the first time the struggle goes away.
The work isn’t always fun – but the accomplishments are!
Becoming strong is gratifying!
There is something innately satisfying with building strength and seeing a muscle take form when you give it a flex. The satisfaction is hard to put into words. I think part of that gratification comes from the fact that strength training helps you defy the aging process. Doctors Chris Crowley and Henry Lodge wrote Younger Next Year, and I love a quote from the book:
Strength training will make you feel good and stay healthy for the rest of your life – once you get over the shame and terror and revulsion of going to the gym.
There are few things in life that we can do for ourselves while confidently feeling we can produce results. Strength training is one of them. Lifting weights equals getting strong, feeling good, and being healthier. It is that simple and straightforward. For me, this is part of the appeal. Put in the work, and you will get results. It doesn’t get much better than that!
The best strength training program is the one designed for you!
As you get older, a personalized strength training program is probably best. Having individual attention from a personal trainer means body parts in need will receive a little extra care. You will be coached in proper technique to prevent injuries and get the most out of exercise. Your program will consist of exercises that are best for you, your goals and your body. Plus, working with a personal trainer guarantees that you have someone working hard to pull the best out of you! Having a specially designed strength training program is a pretty amazing journey!
Develop strong muscles and healthy bones with a strength training program designed especially for you. We’ll make sure you are lifting weights correctly and preventing injuries too!
