Your Ankles Are Important, Too! Who Knew?

When you think about stretching, how often to you think about stretching your ankles? If you’re like me, probably, um… never! Occasionally, I will stretch my calves. But even when I stretch that part of my leg, I am thinking about my calf muscle and not what’s going on in my ankle. I am not sure why. Maybe it’s because the ankle isn’t that glamorous of a joint! Typically, the ankle doesn’t give people trouble. On the contrary, everything above the ankle does. As a result, we tend to spend our time focusing on other areas of the body.

The little, yet mighty, ankle sets the stage for what goes on in the rest of our body.

When our ankles are stiff, the rest of our body tries to make up for the limited movement. The ankle’s stiffness starts a chain of compensations in the rest of our body. As we walk or run, for example, stiff ankles usually mean the rest of our body pitches forward. This forward position puts more pressure on our backs and necks, causing lower back pain and even neck pain. Without mobility in the ankles, our knees take on more pressure, putting them at risk for chronic pain, not to mention injury.

Let’s get your ankles and the rest of your body moving better!
