What’s the Fitness Journey About Anyway?

An interesting question, isn’t it?  Why do we put ourselves through the discomfort of working out?  Why do we stress about how to eat healthier?  What are we trying to achieve?

Be Healthier

“Being healthier” is a very common fitness goal.  Losing weight and maintaining healthy blood pressure + cholesterol are important components of this goal.  Disease prevention is also high on the list. Many statistics show the health benefits of improved fitness. I am glad to see the increased focused on healthier living.

Improve the quality of life

People want to be strong and fit so they can live the life they desire for themselves – now and in the future.  One of my long time clients hit 50 and his blood pressure and cholesterol started an upward climb. His doctor suggested medication.  My client said “H*LL NO.”  He wanted to live healthier now so he could be fishing and golfing well beyond his 80’s.  He didn’t want to be watching life go by, one pill at a time.  He wanted to be out there living his life without limitations.

Be a Better Me

“Thank you for helping me make something of myself.”  That was written on a note sent to me from one of my very first personal training clients.  Somewhere in the midst of her journey, her goals of losing weight and toning up her body shifted to a deeper goal.  She wanted to prove to herself that she was worth the effort and that she could live her life in a way that enabled her to thrive.  She was testing herself to see what she was made of, and she liked what she saw.

Fulfill a Yearning

When you dig deep and reflect upon the importance of a fitness journey, I have come to believe that the journey fulfills a basic yearning in life.  I think we yearn to have a healthy body.  As human beings, we have a fundamental desire to have a fit and healthy body.  Physical fitness creates a physical asset which helps facilitate a satisfying and gratifying life.
