Weight Watchers Changed Their Name!

The world of weight loss is changing.  Even the iconic company, Weight Watchers, is changing.  With their new name, WW, they are leaving “weight” behind and encouraging healthier habits instead.

Today’s generation is more preventative; they want to live healthy

This was a headline in one of the articles I read about the new WW.  I see this shift in my work as a personal trainer.  While weight loss is still an important element for most people, our clients are more focused on being healthy and strong.  They want to learn how to exercise better, eat healthier, improve their sleep and reduce the amount of stress in their lives.  With this shift, it feels that people are more engaged and more empowered with respect to their health.  To me that bodes well for the future!

People are seeing that diets don’t work

Diets tell you exactly what and how much to eat.  It is compelling to want to use a diet for this reason.  The clearly spelled out directions makes dieting seemingly easy.  But diets have nothing to do with your preferences, nor do they consider what works for your body and your life circumstances.  Certainly there is a place for diets, especially when there are health concerns.  But most people are best served by keeping it simple:

  • Make better food choices that create better health and healthier bodies.
  • Make small, doable, healthier changes over time and you will see the weight come off.

The healthy habit comes first though!

Keep it simple

There is beauty in simplicity.  Simple nutrition habits are ones that can survive the ebbs and flows of life.  Simple strategies include eating slowly, eating until you are full (not stuffed), and eating only when you are hungry.   These simple habits done consistently over time can lead to significant weight loss.  Other examples of simple strategies include eating smaller portions, eating whole foods (rather than processed), and eating the fruits and vegetables that you like.  Start simple and go from there.

Knowledge is power

Learning about healthy food is an extremely powerful process.  Teach yourself to read labels and choose foods with the fewest ingredients.  I like to be sure I can pronounce the ingredients too!  If an ingredient is scientific sounding, I skip it.  Also learn what a healthy meal looks like and use that as your guide for what you put on your plate and in your mouth.

You don’t have to struggle on your own, we can help you be healthy and lose weight!
