Nothing but Shavasana!
One of my favorite ways of improving my mobility and reducing my everyday aches and pains is to do nothing! Yep, nothing, nada! Well, actually, I am doing something – I am laying on the floor relaxing my body and my mind. It’s a perfect way to release pent up tension and stress in your body and mind at the end of the day!
For those of you who are familiar with yoga, you’ll know this position as Shavasana or Corpse Pose. While it looks simple, it is actually quite challenging. It is a pose of complete relaxation and peace – which makes it one of the most challenging to achieve.
I will save the detailed “how to” for the Shavasana pose for the yoga manuals and videos (there are plenty out there that will describe the pose in great detail). However, you can get the gist of the pose by looking at my pictures below.
How to Shavasana*
Here’s a quick summary of the Shavasana pose:
- You are laying on the floor, arms and legs extended, and palms turned up.
- Eyes are closed.
- You are breathing quietly.
- You are consciously becoming aware of tension and discomfort in your body and intentionally releasing it until you are in a state of complete relaxation.

Benefits of Shavasana
The benefits of laying on the floor and relaxing are numerous. For something so simple, the rewards are bountiful!
- Mental stress is relieved, and the brain is calmed.
- Muscular tension and stress are reduced.
- Reduced headaches, fatigue, and insomnia.
- Lowered blood pressure.
- An experience of peace.
No matter how I feel physically and mentally, as I get down on the floor, I know I am only minutes away from a blissful feeling of peace and calm. I may start with a body contorted and compressed from the day’s work and stressors. But after 15-20 minutes, my body is straightened and lengthened, and my mind is quiet and at ease.
I know that I am training my body and mind to be tension-free. It is a practice that I take not only to my sleep but also to my day. And that is a beautiful!
Give it a try! And find a sense of peace!
