You Can Benefit from Strength Training at Any Age!

Why I like strength training

About a year ago, I wrote about why I like strength training.

These were my reasons:

  • Helps me stay young and in control
  • It enhances my overall health
  • It translates to more ease and stability in my life
  • Builds my confidence, resilience, and determination
  • Creates satisfaction and gratitude

It’s fun to report that strength training still works for me! And it can for you too!

There are so many ways strength training can be adapted to your fitness levels, your movement patterns and your athletic abilities. Not to mention your goals- however they may shift over time!

The joys of being strong

When I first started lifting weights, I was in the midst of competing in Masters Swimming. My personal trainer designed a program for power and helped me (at 44 years old) swim faster than I did at the peak of my age group and college swimming careers. I even placed in the top ten at a national swim meet!

I became intrigued by my strength. I got pretty darn strong. During some of my weight lifting exercises, I could lift close to 150lbs!

Now I am more interested in enhancing the quality of my movement and sustaining my strength.

I shared these new goals with my personal trainer (yes, I am a trainer working out with a trainer. I’ve had one for 14 years and counting). Together, we designed a new program that focuses on mobility, joint mobilization, and injury prevention – ensuring that my body stays strong and able as I head into my 60’s!

Strength Training can be easily scaled to what is going on in your body!

I hit a snag over the past year.

My body began to get really stiff with new aches and pains introducing themselves. I wanted to hold onto how I was training, because I did not want to lose my strength. I did not want to give in because it felt like giving up. But my body was not responding well to what I was doing.

With the help of my personal trainer, we designed a new program. We reduced weights and increased reps. We scaled back on my lower body work where I was experiencing aches and pains. We went back to the basics on movement techniques. But most importantly, we did what was best for my body, while we sustained my strength and fitness levels.

I am back at it with a stronger body overall and fewer aches and pains. Still working on that stiffness – but getting there!

Strength Training’s diversity makes it accessible to virtually everyone!

A person with limited athletic abilities and exercise can participate in strength training, as well as those who are the most talented, elite athletes. Never exercised before? Have arthritis or injuries to deal with? No worries! If you can move your body, you can lift weights and improve how you look, feel and move! That is the beauty of strength training!

To strength train, no fancy equipment is even needed. You can be your own gym! Body weight exercises are a great way to build strength and get fit.

But there is plenty of equipment to use. Dumbbells, machines, cables, resistance bands, balls, barbells — the list is almost endless and someone is always inventing something new. The variety and endless options keeps strength training fresh, engaging and fun!  And accessible!
