Every once in awhile, I play a game with myself. I try to identify the ONE limiting factor for clients in their quest for fitness. While I am never able to land on one constraint, I do usually end up with a relatively short list. And my list typically includes the key aspects of the “mental game” in one’s fitness journey.
The physical side of fitness is pretty easy – exercise, proper nutrition, sleep, manage stress. It’s the mind game that typically trips people up. So here are my top 7 mental skills that are essential to success. I consider them skills, because these are things that we can learn if we put our mind to it (pun intended!).
If you don’t get it right the first time keep at it. Don’t give up. Practice letting go of the past and turning your focus to the next moment when you can be a little bit better with each fitness habit.
Aim for 90% compliance. Take one behavior goal (e.g. eat a well balanced breakfast) and practice it until you can get to 90% compliance. Focus on the 90% not the 10%. Don’t worry about being 100% perfect. Statistics show that 90% will get most people to their goals.
Open Your Mind
It is amazing how set we are in our ways and our beliefs without even knowing it. Learn to be mindful and to objectively observe how you think and how you act. Be open to new information and suggestions on how to change.

Trust the Process
Oh, this can be hard! If you are working the process, hitting your habits 90%, measuring the results, and adjusting your exercise, eating, lifestyle habits accordingly – then learn to trust the process. But be sure you are doing the work – 90% consistency!
Manage the distractions
This is an important mental skill to learn. Our world is filled with distractions. I think the biggest distraction to manage is people who want you to do what they want you to do when they want you to do it. This is a huge obstacle in a fitness journey. Remember, your journey is about you and what you want. When distracted, learn to return your mind and your focus to your task at hand. Let the others wait.
Believe in yourself
If you think you can, you will. If you aren’t sure, find someone who will believe in you until you are ready to believe in yourself. And believe in them!
Fuel your action by self-love
A big factor of success. Learn to pay attention to how you motivate yourself. Do you bully yourself to get to the gym? Do you beat yourself up when you overindulge at the dinner table, hoping that will end any future indulgence? You may think this will “straighten you out” and get you on the right path. This type of inspiration (if you can call it inspiration) will burn you out or minimize your results. Over the longer term, positive energy is the better choice. Actions taken through compassion for yourself, motivated by the experience of renewed health, and inspired by the choice to be fit will progress you more quickly and steadily towards your fitness goals.
