5 Benefits of Adding Running to Your Strength Routine

Running? No Way! Okay…

As someone who was primarily focused on strength training, running was the last thing on my mind. In fact, this was something I would avoid at all costs. The idea of going out and pounding the pavement was about as appealing to me as a root canal.

It was not going to happen.

Over time, that perception changed, and I’m glad it did. Running has many great benefits when you combine it with your strength training routine.

Call us at Strand Fitness (630-653-8152) so we can design a fitness routine for you!

Benefits of Adding Running to Your Strength Routine

Improved Cardio and Muscular Endurance

In the gym, I used to tire quickly because my cardio was being neglected. As a result, I would quickly plateau. That changed when I added running to my routine. Adding moderate cardio in between your lifting sessions can help improve your overall cardio to help you get over those plateaus.

Great for Your Bones

While lifting helps to strengthen your muscles, running can actually help to strengthen your bones. Your bones need development to help support the muscles you’re building. Running is high impact, which means it loads and remakes your bones along with your muscles. For those who may be at risk of having weak bones, running can help improve that.

Helps with weight loss

Running can help with weight loss by burning extra calories. One hour lifting in the gym can burn around 300 calories, whereas running for an hour can burn twice that. If weight training plateaus happen, giving running a try can help you get over those plateaus to hit your weight loss goals.

Helps to Build a Balanced Body

We all want to be as balanced as we can when it comes to our bodies. Contrary to popular belief, moderate running actually helps prevent muscle loss when combined with weight training. Just don’t go too crazy.

Helps Relieve Stress

Running can be very meditative. If you are someone who likes to work out alone, running can be a great time to be with your thoughts. On top of that, running has been proven to help better your mood. Reducing stress and improving mood helps with sleep, which is important for muscle recovery. So you can’t go wrong!

Give Running a Go!

The next time you feel like running isn’t for you, remember that our bodies were designed to run. Running, as long as your joints are healthy, is a wonderful complement to any fitness routine to help build a strong and balanced body.
